Join Us In a Challenge

So, what is the challenge I'm talking about?  Most bariatric surgeon's in this country belong to an organization called the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).  Well, the ASMBS has issued a challenge and I would like to invite you to join us in it……

In an effort to increase obesity awareness and educate the public, the ASMBS Foundation has developed the United We Step National Pedometer Challenge.

This challenge is quite interesting because you can help yourself and do some good at the same time!  If you have had surgery you have probably heard someone (or maybe several someones!) in our office say that walking and being active is very important for losing weight and also for keeping it off.

The National Pedometer Challenge is something that will get you walking and also help make you aware of how many steps you are taking in a day.  So, here is the challenge…..

The ASMBS Foundation has a goal of 42 million steps in one 24 hour period (November 2, 2015).  The 42 million steps was picked for a very specific reason.  It is equal to 20,800 miles which is the boundary of the United States.  So basically they want all the steps taken by every one taking this challenge to equal the entire boundary of the United States. Every single person doing the challenge that day will count how many steps they took that day and when it all gets added up our goal is for it to be 42 million steps!

Since we are a bariatric practice I have registered "Garden State Bariatrics" as a team for the challenge.  If you want to be on the team (and we would love you to join!)  you can join here
In order to do this you will need a pedometer (a device which counts the number of steps you take). It is something you can get at Walmart or Target, if you have a smartphone there are apps you can download which will do the same thing.
Here is a link which will help you set up your iphone as a pedometer.
Here is a link which will do the same thing if you have a Android
I also have to say that if you downloaded the Garden State Bariatrics app the "Fitbit Challenge" part of the app will also track your steps. So, get your pedometer and starting counting your steps…something we want  you to do anyway!

This is a fundraiser so you will be asked if  you want to contribute toward our goal. It is not a requirement that you contribute any money but of course any funds contributed will be most appreciated.  Whether you contribute or not, please register, join our team and walk on November 2nd!

Remember the purpose is to raise awareness obesity and educate the public….feel free to forward this email to anyone you think would be interested in contributing

Another thing we would love for our patients to contribute to is a coat drive happening in Newark.  A Soup Kitchen in Newark recently contacted our office to find out if any of our patients had old coats that are now too big.  As anyone who has lost over 100 lbs is aware, clothes often are pretty loose after that type of weight loss.  If  you, or someone you know, is in that situation you can make a difference for a someone in need. Simply drop off your old coat to either of our offices (Millburn or Toms River) and we will make sure it gets to St Ann's Soup Kitchen.

Also, please go to our facebook page here and like/share our page or leave a comment if you haven't already..Thanks!

Our "Patient of the Month" this month is Brenda Leone (pictured above).  I'll let her describe in her own words the journey so far……

Before seeing Dr. Yurcisin, I was battling my weight at almost 400 pounds. I decided to have the Gastric Bypass on October 7, 2013.  My life has changed so much since!  Thanks to Dr. Yurcisin and his nice staff, I lost 170 pounds and feel great.  Prior to the surgery, I was told I would never have children.  The weight loss has made it possible for me to have my precious daughter.

Congratulations Ms. Leone,  one thing I would like to point out is that difficulty getting pregnant is one of the health problems of being obese (one that we may not think of).  As Ms. Leone's testimonial describes being able to get pregnant and safely carry the baby to delivery is one of the (often joyful but unexpected) side effects of bariatric surgery!

As with all of our Patients of the Month Ms. Leone has gotten a free gift card to a local supermarket (healthy foods only!), courtesy of Garden State Bariatrics.  Again, if you would like to be considered for Patient of the Month, please send us a Before/After picture with a short write up of your experience with Bariatric Surgery.  You can send it to our office manager, Kathleen Glorioso at kathy@gsbwc.com
