Eat Food

What do I mean, eat food?  Don't we all eat food, well  you might be surprised, read on….

….unfortunately for too many of us we don't really eat food….I know that is a strange thing to say, but what I mean is we don't eat food, we eat edible food-like substances!  Now in today's go-go world where convenience is everything, we all want something where we can open the package and serve with little or no preparation.  There is definitely a price to paid for that convenience.

Let me give you an example of what I mean, have you ever read the ingredient list on a food label, it's painful but can be very enlightening.  I am going to give you the ingredient list for two different packaged products, one is an English Muffin with "healthy grains" the other is cookies, see if you can figure out which is which:

Product 1: Unbleached enriched wheat flour (Flour, Niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), Sugar, Vegetable oils (palm and/or interesterified and hydrogenated soybean and/or cottonseed), Invert sugar, butter, nonfat milk, cornstarch, contains 2% or less of: egg whites, salt and baking soda

Product 2: Unbleached enriched wheat flour (flour, malted barley flour, reduced iron, niacin, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), water, whole wheat flour, modified food starch, farina, wheat gluten, polydextrose, honey, yeast, sugar, salt, preservatives (calcium propionate, sorbic acid), soybean oil, malt, monoglycerides, natural and artificial flavor, Xantham gum, Acesulfame potassium, sucralose, whey, soy flour, nonfat milk

Boy, they both sound good, don't they!!  It's very instructive because when  you look at them this way they both look essentially the same…and that is because they are!    Basically refined carbohydrates with oil and sugar (and a whole bunch of chemicals!)….an edible food like substance, which is sort of disguised like food.

Now I realize it can be difficult to eliminate all packaged foods from our lives, but you should do your best to minimize them. Here is your best, and safest, bet…eat food. So, what do I mean by eat food, its simple, "real food" generally doesn't require a label…things like lean meat, fish, fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts etc.

Real food is something that moves or grows and is not processed beyond recognition!  Salmon, beef, bananas, lettuce, tomatoes, lentils etc…these things are "real food",  "Xantham gum" is NOT real food.

By the way, in case you haven't figured it out, number 1 are the cookies and number 2 are the English muffins.

Support Group:

For our support group this week we are bringing back a real crowd's our class trip!  This Wednesdays' support group will be going to Trader Joe's for a shopping trip. We did this last year and got a lot of really positive feedback.

Everyone will meet at the ACC (200 South  Orange Ave, Livingston, NJ) at 6:00 PM this Wednesday (May 5th) and then go to Trader Joe's to get some practical advice on shopping and what to buy (with an emphasis on "bariatric friendly" foods).

Just to be clear no one is required to buy anything, but if you want to purchase something you are welcome to.  We did this last year and the patients who participated said they got a lot of value out of it.

Yoga Class

Just wanted anyone who is interested in our monthly yoga class to know it will be next Monday (May 10th), so save the date.  In case you don't know it is free to all of our patients and it is held at our Millburn office starting at 7:30 PM
