Diabetes is like a Cancer
I realize the title of this issue of the newsletter is provocative, that is intentional…….
….on February 4th Oprah did a show entitled “America’s Silent Killer”. It was about diabetes and the fact that it is a public health epidemic! Unfortunately you cannot view the entire show on YouTube, but there is a 3 minute segment where Dr. Oz describes, using animation, how diabetes damages blood vessels and can cause heart attacks…you can view it here (you do have to watch a 30 second commercial first, though)
Dr Oz is a heart surgeon, and before I started doing bariatric surgery I was a vascular surgeon. Heart surgeons and vascular surgeons pretty much do the same thing…they treat blockages in the blood vessels. Cardiac (heart) surgeons treat blockages in the blood vessels of the heart and vascular surgeons treat blockages in the blood vessels of the rest of the body (arms, legs, neck, belly etc). I mention this because as a vascular surgeon I am well aware of the damage diabetes does to the human body, hence the title of today’s newsletter….diabetes really is a killer!
Some of the statistics are really quite frightening: diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, limb loss, and kidney failure in the country! If you would like some more information about this the following link has everything that was discussed on Oprah’s show I have to say it is quite informative and medically accurate.
You can read the whole thing in 5 or 10 minutes and there are excellent links to related topics.
One of the related topics is all the foods that have “hidden” sugars in them…in other words foods that have lots of sugar but you wouldn’t really think of as sweets. The link is here:
Now, I mention all of this not to frighten, but as a sort of wake up call. If you are obese you are at greatly increased risk of diabetes and if you have diabetes you are at serious risk of major medical problems. The good news is there is a very effective treatment and for many patients a cure for diabetes. Bariatric surgery, and specifically a gastric bypass, will cure almost 80-90 percent of type 2 diabetes (and as I mentioned before most diabetics in this country are type 2).
If you know anyone who is diabetic (or at risk for diabetes) and they would like to find out how bariatric surgery can cure their diabetes I will be having a free informational seminar at my Millburn office tomorrow (Wednesday) February 17th starting at 6:30 pm.
The Millburn office is at 225 Millburn Ave, Suite 204 in Millburn, if you will be attending please let us know by email to: firstname.lastname@example.org. Of course the seminar is free and open to anyone who is interested in finding out about bariatric surgery…not just diabetics!
Our Support group for patients who have had surgery over one year ago will be tomorrow as well, it will be held at the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) located at:
200 South Orange Ave, Livingston, NJ. The support group starts at 6 pm.
Well, that is it for this week folks, and I would really urge you to check out the links…the stuff Oprah has on her site is really quite good. More importantly if you are diabetic, or at risk for it to get into action now, before you develop serious medical problems!
